Don't Miss Anything

We have reviewed thousands of claims. We make sure nothing get’s missed, and you get what you deserve.

Many home and business owners can see damage to their properties.

However, most wind and hail damage cannot be seen. Not having your home properly inspected can result in Tens Of Thousands of dollars in damages over and above the damages caused by the storm… and you’ll be out of pocket for those damages by not properly submitting the claim to your insurance company.

How do you know if you have damages to your home or business that will be covered by your insurance policy? You may have seen damage to your property or your neighbors property, most people have not.

Many property owners are asking themselves, “When I look at my roof, I don’t see any hail or wind damage. What’s all the fuss about?”

wind damage insurance claim

Hail and Wind damage cannot always be seen very easily most of the time.

You usually will never see actual holes or indentations from hail or even missing shingles from wind. However, small amounts of hail and wind damage will drastically shorten the life of your roof, your siding, the paint or stain on your exterior, window screens, and more.

If you have noticed neighbors getting work done, you can be 99% sure that you will need a new roof and may have other covered damages to your property as well. It can’t hurt to have your property inspected by a State Licensed Insurance Adjuster.

An inspection from a licensed Storm Inspector/Adjuster will give you peace of mind. When your inspection is completed you will be able to make an informed educated decision on whether you should file a claim or not.

Wind damage claim tips and help for homeowners and business owners that have property damage from high winds

Roofing shingles, siding, and even brick are made to protect your home or building against the weather. However, high winds that often accompany most storms can cause significant damage, both seen and unseen. It is so important to realize that not all wind storm damage is obvious. In fact, it’s the hidden damage that can cause significant problems many weeks, even months after the wind storm has passed through.

No one wants to find out many years after a storm that they have tens-of-thousands of dollars in damages to their home or building. Especially, if the cost for damages could have been paid for by their insurance company for much less than what was really needed.

One of the biggest problems we hear about is from policyholders who are caught in the middle of their contractor and insurance adjuster. “How do I know if my insurance company is trying to low-ball me, or if this contractor is trying to sell another job?” Hence, the reason you should have an unbiased wind damage inspection of your property. Not doing so can be very costly.

Wind damage claims tips

As insurance claim professionals since 1998 we have reviewed thousands of claims and have found that both insurance adjusters, policyholders, and contractors have unknowingly and will often miss hidden damages caused by wind.

The fact is that in almost all instances, it is better to have a qualified, wind damage representative review your claim. Our Public Adjusters have been insurance damage contractors and licensed insurance adjusters. We know both sides and are experts of both sides.

You should consider speaking with and using a qualified Wind Damage claim expert that will be looking out for your best interests.

After all, it’s free to simply speak with someone to get a feel for where you stand.

The Most Costly Wind Damage Mistake Made By Most Policyholders
It’s hard to imagine that almost all policyholders who have been through a wind storm event will depend solely upon an insurance company adjuster’s assessment and estimate of the damage to their home or business?

Policyholders will allow their insurance adjuster to inspect their home or building, will actually allow them to process their entire claim, and generate an estimate of wind damage for their entire claim… Without Even Asking Any Questions AND/OR… Without Even Considering Or Asking Someone Else If The Insurance Adjuster Is Correct!

Every day there are policyholders who are accountants, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and considered socially intelligent, unknowingly accepting the adjuster’s calculations for their wind claims. They hand over their full trust to the adjuster who works for their insurance company, without obtaining any assistance from other professionals, or consulting with a wind or storm damage claim professional.

This has to be, without-a-doubt, the most costly insurance mistake people can ever make in their lifetime. As if it’s not bad enough that people have suffered wind damage, to then just simply rely on someone else – who is not really there to look out for you – visits your property, inspect your storm related damages, generates a totally BIASED, UNCONTESTED valuation of the loss, and then completely trust that they have your best interest in mind…

Is Absolutely INSANE!

Why you should watch out for scams
Incredibly, policyholders permit this sort of foolishness to happen on most wind claims, day in and day out. For the majority of us it’s human nature to be mindful and cautious of scams, we even count our “change” at the grocery store checkout line, as well as diligently check over our restaurant receipts to see if our waiter tried to add food or drinks we really didn’t order.

We all do such things and don’t even realize it. Surprisingly, we will go totally out of our way to calculate and value the “small potatoes” in life. However, when a claim contains tens-of-thousands and even hundreds-of-thousands of dollars in damages, we will confide in an insurance adjuster that ultimately is calculating damages for BOTH SIDES of the wind claim.

Where would you expect and believe that adjuster’s loyalty and commitment will be? To you, or the insurance company they work for?

You know your property best
No individual is as in tune or knows your property like the owner does. Really, who knows your property better than you?

In a wind damage situation there are things needed to prepare and properly calculate for the claim. In most cases, items and details are omitted or missed by the adjuster, the property owner, and their contractor during the claim process.

Each is an expert at their own job or career. Is your adjuster a roof expert? Costly mistakes are made by insurance adjusters on a daily basis.

Now imagine your entire claim is all prepared and calculated solely by a representative of your insurance company.

Your insurance adjuster doesn’t really know everything about your home or building. If you have suffered water intrusion, the adjuster doesn’t really know everything about your contents (furniture, clothing, etc.) like you do.

How can an insurance company adjuster possibly be as accurate about your property and belongings than you? In addition, just because the insurance company sends an adjuster to visit and inspect your property for wind damage, does not automatically make them an expert builder, contractor, or even certified in wind damage restoration.

McNally Wind Damage Claim from Raleigh, NC

wind damage insurance claim nc

The above photos are from the McNally family in Raleigh. You will notice the photo to the left shows no visible signs or roof damage at all. However, after receiving a notice from us in the mail, the McNally’s took advantage of our “Detailed Storm Inspection”. The inspection revealed that the McNally home had in fact suffered wind damage to the roof. Even after pointing out the above damages, Allstate denied that there was any storm related damages to their home. After discrediting two of Allstate’s “expert roofing consultants” and one engineer, we were able to recover over $15,000 in covered wind related damages. As a result of our involvement the McNally’s now have a new roof on their home and shed.

Safeco Insurance inspected the wind damages on the home and provided a repair estimate in the amount of $9,487.51 for the roof. Mr. Vileno was referred to us by a contractor. After our inspection and valuation of the loss we requested that the Safeco adjuster accompany us on a joint reinspection of the claim damages. We were able to increase the roof claim alone from $9,487.51 to $20,756.27 and secure an additional $26,434.18 for the interior wind driven rain damage. Verost Wind Damage Insurance Claim, Murphy, NC

The Verost family in Murphy, NC had wind rip a small portion of their roof off allowing water entry to their finished garage. The garage was turned into a game room. The water damaged everything inside the building from the ceilings, walls, floors, and all contents. State Farm also insisted that no moisture was behind the walls causing us to remove paneling from the walls showing moisture and mold issues. State Farm wrongfully applied coverage on the claim by stating that the mold caused by the water intrusion limited the payout to $5,000 plus drying services and only paid $7,400 for the wind and water damages. We proved that State Farm was incorrect in their application of coverage as the proximate cause of the loss was water and not mold. The mold was simply a result of the water. After months of proving State Farm’s error in applying coverage, we recovered over $46,000 for the damage.

Roofing

A strong wind storm can displace, rip, and totally tear off all types of roof coverings and shingles, which leaves your roof compromised and ineffective at repelling water. A 3-tab roof (the most common type of roof shingle) that has been damaged by high winds loses its ability to effectively shed water and protect your building from water intrusion. Long-term exposure to exterior elements on a roof that has been compromised by wind can lead to wood rot and even be structurally compromised.

More importantly, small leaks can lead to wet insulation, mold, and attract rodents. All of which is not covered by your insurance unless you report your wind damage in a reasonable time frame. If your home has been hit by a wind storm and you have asphalt shingles, a metal roof, flat roof on a commercial building, stone, tile, etc. you’ll want to have your roof inspected as soon as possible.

Siding
Wood, vinyl, and aluminum siding can be displaced, detached and of course torn completely off the building. Splits and cracks that are parallel to the siding along the wood grain of both wood and vinyl siding can happen when the wood bounces, vibrates, or flutters in the wind.

Chipping, gauging, and dents can happen to both wood and vinyl as well. A chip is when a small piece of the siding has been broken off, typically at the edges or at the bottom of a siding panel ridge, where the siding has no inward flexibility to absorb wind loads or a direct hit from wind blown debris. On vinyl siding such damage can best seen when looking up, from the bottom of the panel.

High or severe wind loads can cause flying debris to puncture directly through the siding panels allowing rain water to enter the building. This water intrusion can affect sheathing, insulation and even been seen from the interior. If neglected behind the walls mold and fungus can cause severe rot and damage over time.

Paint
The most common finish on building is paint. Flying debris from strong winds can cause paint to chip, crack, peels and become discolored, many times in large sections. After a severe windstorm you may notice small black marks on your paint as well.

The force of the wind can turn rain into a pressure washer severely affecting your paint finish. All these damages can occur on all painted surfaces like, roofing, siding, soffits and fascias, windows, doors, decks, railings, fencing, and patios to name a few.

Stucco
Although stucco is typically resistant to moderate weather conditions, elevated or severe windstorms can cause serious damage. The most common damage to stucco is dents and holes punched into the surface. Some holes will be larger and easy to see, however, it’s the smaller ones that will require attention and a much closer inspection to be detected. Stucco damage is a serious issue that compromises the exterior of the building. Water intrusion behind stucco can cause serious, long term damages.
Brick
Unless obvious damage has occurred, almost all owners of brick structures overlook damage to the brick until it is too late to submit a claim. While brick holds up well to most wind damage, it can become detached from the building from the direct force of wind. The brick-ties that secure brick to a building is very flimsy, thin, and rather weak. The wind force can bed these ties behind the wall causing the brick to flex. Eventually the compromised brick-ties will snap, rip or break causing the brick wall to collapse. A very costly situation that would have been covered by your property insurance if it was reported.

Wind Damage Claim Tips:

Your insurance adjuster should explain all coverage that is available to you under your policy for wind damage. However, this type of detailed explanation is rarely disclosed or offered to you.

Often, this lack of disclosure is conducted on purpose, and on other occasions it’s also done on purpose (Did you read that? Forgetting to advise you of certain coverage’s is usually withheld until you ask. More often than not; it’s done on purpose.)

This is YOUR home or building, it’s YOUR belongings, it’s YOUR money, and it is YOUR coverage because you paid for it. You must educate yourself to ensure you’re being fully compensated for the wind damages YOU have suffered. With all this being said, you should consider hiring a claim professional. The insurance company has “THEIR” hired adjuster… Shouldn’t “YOU” have your own hired adjuster?

A Public Insurance Adjuster is someone who can look out for “YOU” and look over the shoulder of your insurance company, their estimates, their inventory lists, the amounts they have allotted and “YOUR” amount of loss.

You need to know by obtaining the assistance needed to obtain the “real-world” costs and valuations required to repair or replace the wind damage suffered to your property.

The top 2 mistakes that policyholders make:
  • Deposit Your Claim Checks. It is Your Money…
  • Document Your Loss & Stay Organized

A mistake that policyholders make is that they are under the impression that if they deposit a claim check they received from their carrier, they’re accepting that claim amount as a settlement. This is not the case. In reality you actually have up to three (3) years from the date of loss to submit a claim. In addition, you can even ADD missed damages to an existing claim within the same three (3) year period.

So, by having your existing claim or even a claim that has already been closed or settled by your carrier, reviewed by a wind damage claim professional will ensure you have been fully compensated. Additional claim proceeds can even be obtained if your property or building has been demolished or even leveled tot he ground by high winds.

It’s a fact, even if your wind claim has had several payments and all proceeds from your carrier has been deposited, or your home or building has been demolished and removed, you can still obtain additional claim proceeds from any and all items that were missed, not addressed properly, along with items that were previously underpaid. As with most insurance claims, property damaged by wind will see tens-of-thousands, or even hundreds-of-thousands of dollars more than the carrier has already paid can be are recovered. Yes, even long AFTER your claim has been closed. Even if you feel that you have received a fair claim settlement… you usually have not.

Although true, it’s the policyholder’s responsibility to take action and do their part to protect themselves. You’re doing that now by reading up on what to do. Here are a few wind claim tips to help your thought process during your wind claim and/or after your claim has been closed.

Roofing/Siding
Most of the time high winds from a windstorm, thunderstorm, hurricane, or tornado, may not appear to have damaged the roof and siding from the ground. Surprisingly, even roofers, adjusters, and engineers will often miss significant wind damages even when they climb the roof. Why? Lazy, undetailed, and/or improper inspections. It’s for this reason to have your roof inspected by an unbiased, professional to find windstorm related damages. A professionals goal will be to seek and find all related damages. Looking for cracks, gouges or tears that affect the roof tabs and siding direct wind damage or from flying debris. High wind activity will also rip, tear, and crack many types of roofing and siding. Such affects on the siding and roof can often allow water entry.
Windows & Gutters
Wind activity and flying debris will often damage window glass or seal failure. Seal failure is when you see a fog between the panes of glass. Ripped screens, dented or gaged window trim, and/or dented aluminum trim can also be affected. Other issues normally missed are cracks to shutters and displaced, detached or dented gutters.
Brick & Foundations
Masonry should be inspected for splits and separation. Property damage by tornadoes or windstorms can also cause displacement and uplift to footings and foundations. Your foundation perimeter and crawlspaces should be inspected for such damages. Severe structural damage will often remain unseen.
Interior
Extreme storms can cause splitting to the corners of walls. Such stress cracking can also be seen around doors and window openings of the interior. It’s a good idea to check for shifting of flooring and the movement of walls using a level. In the following weeks and months it’s also highly recommended to look out for water stains and mold on walls and ceilings. Such stains could indicate roof damages that have been overlooked.
Plumbing
Windstorms will rack or shake a home or building. Policyholders should open all faucets in kitchens and baths, then open and inspect all cabinets to check the plumbing lines for leaks. Continue by flushing all toilets, run showers and fill all bathtubs with water. Investigate the ceilings below these areas for water marks .

"A Calming Experience During A Stressful Time!"

"For The Public Adjusters communicated very well over the phone and in person. I had wind damage on my roof and some water damage in the interior. They were very respectful and explained things slowly so I could understand them clearly. I never felt in the dark the whole time. I told my father to contact them too. He has some problems with his roof, and on his own the insurance companies try to take advantage. For The Public Adjusters don't let that happen. Everything went better than I would have imagined!"

"Wonderful Help With My Insurance Claim"

"I am writing this review in appreciation for the wonderful kindness I received from Joe and Patrick of For The Public Adjusters. I called them last Monday because I was in a bind. My insurance company was refusing to pay my water damage claim unless I provided item by item explanations for every charge made by my contractors. One of the main contractors (who is not accustomed to working with insurance companies) was completely unresponsive to my repeated requests for the necessary information, and I was at my wits end trying to figure out what to do to get my claim paid. Joe and Patrick spent about 45 minutes on the phone with me, and they gave me pricing for carpet, carpet pad, hourly wages, square foot and lineal foot pricing to name a few. I was then able to provide this information to the contractor so he could make any changes he felt necessary and use it as the basis of an invoice that I would be able to submit to my insurer. I am confident that this will solve the problem, and I am enormously relieved. I am so grateful for the service and assistance they provided, that I wanted to write this very positive review. Sincerely, Pat K."
